Things they say…

People say some crazy things to KADs. I’ve decided to randomly post some as they come. If you have a crazy KAD/Stranger moment that you want to share… email me: juliasworldny@yahoo.com or send as a comment.

Here is a recent one that I had with Dr. Sillypants (my name for the new MD on the floor).

Dr. Sillypants: [reading through my chart] “So, you did not find a match in your family?”

Julia: “No. I am adopted.”

Dr. Sillypants: “What do you mean?”

Julia: “I mean I was born in Seoul, Korea and then adopted by white Americans as an infant, so I do not know my biological relatives.”

Dr. Sillypants: “Oh.” <insert long pause here and confused look> “I just thought….” <insert the sound similar to hmmph> “I thought only the niggers give away their babies.”

How would you have reacted??

    WHAT?

That’s my current reaction, and likely the one that would have come out were I the one listening to this meathead. I probably would have gone with ‘excuse me?’ if I were collected enough to think of something other than WHAT? Followed up with a fun conversation with the department’s chief of staff.

No. No, no, no, no. Tell me I did not just read that. I would call this person Dr. ShittyRacistAsshole Pants. That’s … unbelievable. And yeah, I would go to their superiors as well.

Is this for real? That’s mortifying. You definitely have to make a complaint with the hospital against this doc.

You MUST be kidding. That is the worst comment I have ever heard. I agree that he should be called on it. Did you say anything? I think I would have been too shocked to utter a word.

sorry.. i just reacted and did add what I really should have said. YES yes yes definately write a letter that you request be added to the Dr.’s file that articulates the incident. Give it to superiors and make sure its MORE than one. You might have to put in a few calls to find out exactly who it goes to (direct superior? HR?) but I want to encourage you to do it. I had an incident with a doctor who told me I was “sooo cute” and then proceeded to examine me, and I was in such shock that I never said how uncomfortable that made me and I always wanted to go back and write a letter, but I never did it and always regret it. Even today, when I go to the office, I am nervous each time to see if they put me with that doctor because I know I would have to request another physican. What if you continue to get paired with this doc over and over? f. that.

A few people asked how I reacted. I am sorry to say… I didn’t. I was in such shock, disbelief… thinking “am I dreaming?” Not to mention that when I am feeling well I suck at good come backs… I was having a crappy day medical wise. But done with excuses… I said nothing.

    Sorry. 😦

Thanks for all the supporting comments! Good to know most (is that true? I dunno?!) of the world thinks this guy is way off his rocker.

I have to say that I would have been struck silent. I generally think of all the good things to say long after the idiots are gone. A professional should know better – everyone should know better. Ugh!!!!!

I haven’t checked in for awhile, but I did today, and all I can say now is what a kind person you are for calling this “man” Dr. Sillypants.

Julia’s Jam

It’s just not that black & white. Not because I am taking a stand against. Just because, the issues I face are somewhere in the grey area and to weed through them, I blog. I blog. ~
